Food Allergy & Intolerance

It's difficult enough to deal with a food allergy as an adult. A child with a food allergy can be even more difficult sometimes, because it's harder to tell what's causing the issue.

Food allergies or food intolerance can range from mild to severe, and determining the cause can often be challenging. These types of conditions are on the rise around the world, especially in children. As part of the Center for Advanced Digestive Care (CADC), our pediatric gastroenterologists specializing in food allergies and intolerances at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children's Hospital work with a multidisciplinary team of experts who help diagnose young patients and customize a treatment plan for each child.

Pediatric care at the CADC includes wellness and support services to help patients and families fully manage their care. As an example, conditions such as celiac disease, lactose intolerance, and many food allergies can lead to nutritional deficiencies due to a modified diet. Nutritional counseling provided at the CADC can help patients with digestive diseases and disorders and their families learn strategies to ensure that the child receives all required nutrients while eliminating foods that he or she cannot eat.

Allergy, Celiac Disease and Nutrition Videos

An important aspect of the CADC's mission is educating young patients and their caregivers. In the current age of increasing food intolerance and a higher prevalence of allergies, it is important for patients and families to understand the child's condition in the context of the family's daily life. Our team reviews life strategies for adapting to newly diagnosed conditions, why reactions to certain foods happen, and what to do if a child's symptoms are triggered. Through knowledge and everyday steps, a patient with a food intolerance or allergies and those involved in his or her care can improve the quality of life of the entire family.
