CADC

Research Innovation

From research into the basic mechanisms of gastrointestinal disorders, to the development and study of new medical therapies and minimally invasive surgical techniques, our physicians and scientists remain at the forefront and offer patients the latest technologies and treatments. Our nationally and internationally recognized researchers have interests that span the spectrum of digestive disease specialties.

Current Grant Opportunities

The Center for Advanced Digestive Care periodically posts requests for applications, funded both by the CADC and by close partners. Please check back for new and upcoming grant opportunities.

Research at the Center for Advanced Digestive Care

Basic research efforts taking place in the laboratories of Weill Cornell Medical College and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital are helping to identify the etiology of digestive diseases at the molecular level, allowing the Center for Advanced Digestive Care to deliver leading-edge therapies and innovative procedures to patients. These procedures are frequently performed in the new Helmsley Surgical Suite with its state-of-the-art Siemens Artis Zeego® Medical Imaging System.

Research developments are published in world-reknowned journals as well as the CADC's own Research Spotlight digital news source. View the most recent edition of CADC Research Spotlight.

Some of our research areas include:

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

  • Trials to evaluate novel biologic agents that target tumor necrosis factor (TNF), a member of a super-family of proteins that plays a role in the immune system and inflammation
  • Studying the link between gut inflammation and inflammation tied to arthritis
  • The role of bacteria in gut inflammation
  • Tissue bank devoted to understanding the molecular mechanism of inflammation of the gut. With more than 600 endoscopic and surgical biopsy samples, the tissue bank has supported clinical trials focused on novel biologic agents and the evolving role of antibody profiling and genotyping in classifying therapeutic response
  • Participation in multiple studies looking at the effects of immunotherapy in different stages of pregnancy
  • The role of genetics and gastrointestinal inflammation

Cancers of the Digestive Tract

  • Study of biomarkers associated with colorectal cancer
  • Etiology of adenomas and colon cancer
  • Trials to evaluate the efficacy of novel chemotherapies for colorectal, gastric, liver and pancreatic cancers

Advanced Endoscopy

  • Development of internal EUS-directed transgastric ERCP for patients with anatomic challenges such as roux-en-Y gastric bypass
  • Advanced imaging for diagnosing pancreatico-biliary disorders
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the management of cholangiocarcinoma

Esophageal Disorders

  • Early adoption and study of peroral endoscopic myotomy for achalasia
  • Value-based studies looking at use of Bravo pH monitoring to achieve diagnosis in lieu of long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)
  • Trials to evaluate the efficacy of novel chemotherapies for esophageal cancer
  • Evaluation of new stents for malignant esophageal lesions

Pancreatic Disease

  • Trials to evaluate efficacy of new stent technology for biliary tree drainage
  • Familial pancreatic cancer family registry
  • Role of endoscopic ultrasound for pancreatic cysts

Genetics

  • Genetic causes of colon cancer and other gastrointestinal cancers
  • Tissue bank devoted to colorectal cancer

Weight Loss and Metabolic Surgery

  • Early efficacy research on endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) for patients disqualified for bariatric surgery
  • Clinical & pathophysiological consequences of bariatric surgery
  • Surgical versus medical management of patients with Type II Diabetes

Surgery-Related Studies

  • The use of new technologies, including robotics, for performing surgeries

Pediatric Gastroenterology

  • Long term observational registries of pediatric patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Effects of Vitamin deficiencies on bone density in pediatric patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease
