The NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital Radiation Oncology Residency Training Program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We offer four years of post-graduate training in the specialty of radiation oncology following completion of a year of training in an ACGME-accredited medical, surgical, or transitional year internship.
Our faculty includes six radiation oncologists, three medical physicists and a radiation biologist. The department has three megavoltage linear accelerators (Varian TrueBeam, Clinac iX, Clinac 2100C) and a Philips AcQsim CT simulator. We are a community-based program with accreditation from the American College of Radiology. Advanced image-guided radiotherapy, including intensity modulated radiotherapy, volumetric modulated arc therapy, and stereotactic radiotherapy are available. We perform interstitial and intracavitary brachytherapy implants. Balloon-based accelerated partial breast irradiation is offered to selected patients. High-dose rate treatments are delivered by a Nucletron Iridium-192 afterloader.
We are a clinical affiliate of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Medical Dosimetry Masters Program and the NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital School of Radiation Therapy, participate in the newly formed National Research Group (NRG), and have enrolled numerous patients into RTOG, NSABP, and GOG protocols.

A typical outline of the four-year training program follows:
During clinical rotations, residents evaluate all new patients and actively participate in all aspects of management including simulation, planning, delivery, and quality assurance. It is expected that residents follow patients throughout the course of therapy from start to finish and during follow-up.
Clinical rotations average three months in length, during which each resident physician is assigned to one or two attending physicians. Our attending physicians are generalists who treat all disease sites and are able to practice independently when residents are occupied. Resident physician progress is evaluated and discussed on an individual basis following the completion of each clinical rotation in both written and verbal formats.
Most clinical rotations take place at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in Park Slope. Four weeks each year are spent at our satellite free-standing facility in Bay Ridge, which offers a private practice experience. The pediatric radiation oncology rotation is completed at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center during the third or fourth year.

Each year, resident physicians are required to take the In-Service Training Examination administered by the American Board of Radiology. This comprehensive exam covers clinical oncology, radiation physics, and radiobiology and is intended to prepare residents for the written board examinations and evaluate their performance relative to peers at the same level of training. This helps the program director and residents identify areas where improvement may be needed in basic science or clinical knowledge. The RAPHEX exam is also given annually specifically to assess physics proficiency.
We participate in the National Resident Matching Program. Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
