Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program

Obsterics and Gynecology About Us

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital provides obstetric, gynecologic, and well-woman services, as well as specialty care. The Department is also responsible for graduate and undergraduate medical education and research in all phases of women's healthcare.

The Residency Review Committee approves the residency training program for Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for four years of graduate training with four residents at each level of training plus one preliminary PGY1 resident. In addition, the New York State Council on Graduate Medical Education has named this program a Designated Priority Program (Primary Care).

Our residents currently receive all their training at our Hospital campus. All patients admitted to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist participate in the teaching program under the guidance and supervision of our large full-time faculty and our voluntary staff. The in-patient labor and delivery unit includes 15 state-of-the-art LDR (labor/deliver/recovery) rooms, a Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), and an antepartum intensive care unit. In addition our hospital offers a state-of-the-art Advanced Women's Imaging Center for antepartum testing and evaluation as well as advanced gynecologic ultrasound. The availability of a large number of private obstetric and gynecologic patients enhances the educational experience. Residents assume major operative responsibility and postoperative management for these patients, under close consultation and interaction with the private attending staff.

Residents assume responsibility for patients in the women's health unit of our outpatient department, under the supervision of attending physicians. The outpatient service offers both general and specialty clinics, including colposcopy, gynecologic oncology, high-risk obstetrics and preconception counseling, and urogynecology. As part of our commitment to primary care, all patients in the women's health unit participate in our continuity of care experience. Close attention is given to patient assignment so that residents are exposed to increasing levels of complexity and responsibility in patient care and practical training. Emphasis is on the care of the whole person in a psychosocial context, with a strong emphasis on disease prevention and maintenance of well-being.

Our full-time faculty includes several physicians with specialists representing all of the subspecialties, including maternal-fetal medicine, minimally invasive surgery, gynecologic oncology, and urogynecology.

Members of the faculty conduct clinical and basic research. Resident participation is required. Our department has a director of research to assist residents in designing and carrying out research. Resident projects are presented at both our department and hospital-wide research day and presentation at local, regional, and national meetings is strongly encouraged and supported.

In addition to our residents, the department employs physician assistants, and midwives for both the obstetrics and gynecology service. These individuals work closely with the resident staff and are supervised by the resident staff. Their primary roles are to improve clinical care and reduce the clinical burden of the non-teaching activities of the residents.
