No medical discipline has undergone more rapid expansion and evolution in the past quarter century than obstetrics and gynecology. We have developed a much deeper understanding of the subspecialties of maternal fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, gynecologic oncology and urogynecology. At the same time, obstetricians-gynecologists have accepted a broader role as the primary care providers for most women from puberty through old age. We are patient-educators, counselors and health care advocates, while still providing continuous preventive and therapeutic care.
To educate new doctors in this expanded role, residency programs must incorporate more experience in ambulatory medicine, with an emphasis on continuity of care. At the same time, training programs must simultaneously continue to educate their residents in all aspects of general obstetrics and gynecology and all of its specialties.
At NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, we understand this need to offer a balanced approach to residency education. Our program is a Priority Designated Program in Primary Care as determined by the New York State Council on Graduate Medical Education.
We earned that designation by placing special emphasis on the continuity of care that our residents provide to their own panel of patients throughout their four years of residency. At the same time, our very busy obstetrical and gynecological services allow our residents to gain a strong foundation in management of patients on the labor floor and in the operating room. Our residents are equally well trained in all four of the subspecialties supervised by our fellowship-trained and board certified sub-specialists.
Our educational goals are achieved through a program of progressive clinical responsibility and a comprehensive didactic curriculum. Throughout their training, our academically oriented, full-time staff along with a large number of dedicated and educationally committed voluntary attending staff supervises our residents. We guide each of our residents to become a capable, sensitive and caring physician, fully grounded in general and subspecialty obstetrics and gynecology. We believe that our graduates are fully prepared obstetrician gynecologists who will serve as primary care physicians for women while remaining competitive for fellowships, should they elect to continue their training. Over the past decade, each resident that has applied has been accepted to a competitive programs across the country.
But what sets our program apart from most others is its atmosphere. Learning and growth in the stressful and tiring world of an Ob/Gyn residency requires an environment that is supportive and cooperative. Each resident must see him or herself as a member of a cohesive team with mutual goals and priorities. I believe that our program is the product of a tightly knit family. Our full-time and voluntary faculty members understand the importance of residency education and actively participate in both its didactic and clinical aspects. Our residents support and encourage one another and are invested in each other's success.

Phyllis Lawani, MD
Program Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program
After earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from The University of Texas at Dallas and her Medical Degree from the University of Texas at Houston Medical School, Dr. Lawani completed her internship and residency in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Texas at Southwestern Medical Center (Parkland Memorial Hospital). She also earned her M.B.A. with specialization in Healthcare Management from The University of Texas at Tyler and graduated with honors.
Dr. Lawani has many years of professional experience spanning multiple roles including Residency Program Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vice Chair of the Department, Medical Student Clerkship Director, and Chair of the Clinical Quality and Peer Review Committee. She has garnered several teaching awards and honors and was named to the Best Doctors List in Texas. She is also a member of several professional societies, including the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She serves as an Oral Board Examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and enjoys resident education, general obstetrics, and office gynecologic procedures. In her spare time, she enjoys running, traveling, and spending time with family.
