Housing & Location

NewYork-Presbyterian housing, Brown Stone Brooklyn

Residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital is unique because of the opportunity to create a dynamic and efficient lifestyle that blends social and professional lives well. Traditionally, residents have lived in either Park Slope or in Manhattan below 23rd street. Unfortunately, we do not offer Hospital-based housing.

Park Slope

The Hospital is in the middle of Park Slope, often cited as the best neighborhood in New York City. The Slope is known for its architectural beauty, neighborhood charm, progressiveness, overall quality of life, and cultural institutions. Park Slope has two subway stations with easy access into downtown Manhattan within 20 minutes and access beyond to anywhere else in the city.

Culturally there are many world-renowned institutions in and around Park Slope. Within minutes from the Hospital are the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, the largest public gardens in the country, the majestic main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, second in size only to the Metropolitan Museum in Manhattan and home to one of the most extensive collections of Egyptian archeological artifacts in the U.S. Also close by, is the Brooklyn Academy of Music, featuring music of all forms from classic to jazz as well as live theatre and independent cinema, and the Barclay's Center, home of the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Islanders and home to many concerts each year.

Just a block away from the Hospital is Prospect Park, which is a New York gem. It was designed by the creators of Central Park, rivaling it in scale and theme and serving as a wonderful escape from urbanity. A nicely paved road with bike lanes and running lanes is closed to cars for all but a few hours of morning and evening rush-hour traffic and is the home to several of the city's most respected running and biking organizations. In the summer the Celebrate Brooklyn Concert Series is held at the band shell in the park just three blocks from the Hospital, hosting local and national acts of all genres for free lawn concerts.

There are also numerous gyms in the neighborhood including the New York Sports Club and a newly renovated YMCA, which both offer discounts to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital employees.

Medical residents learn and practice serious academic medicine in the Hospital, but also lead enviable lives as a result of their location. You are invited to experience the neighborhood and imagine what your life might be like as a NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital resident living in New York City.

Manhattan

Many residents have chosen to live in various neighborhoods of Manhattan, typically within a few blocks of the F Train. Chelsea, Soho, Nolita, the East and West Villages, and the Lower East Side are all good options. Depending on where you live, you can expect a 25-45 minute door-to-door commute to the Hospital. Sometimes residents living in the city face inconveniences due to subway inconsistencies, but at shift change (8pm, 8am) this is generally not a problem.

With so many diverse opportunities available, you can choose the living situation and lifestyle which best suits your needs and still be within an easy commute of the Hospital.
