In the Psychiatry Department at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, we provide the full range of inpatient services for adults who are acutely ill with psychiatric disorders. Our multidisciplinary approach combines the talents of psychiatrists, nursing staff, social workers, recreation therapists, and substance abuse counselors. The Department consists of three components: an adult inpatient Psychiatry unit, a Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry service, and brief Emergency Department consultation.

Our Services

Allen Hospital Psychiatry Department provides care to adult inpatients admitted voluntarily or who are referred by physicians or family; outpatients treated at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center who may require additional services as inpatients; adults admitted to our Emergency Department who require further evaluation and comprehensive psychiatric care on an inpatient unit; and patients hospitalized at Allen Hospital for medical/surgical/obstetric conditions who also require psychiatric services.

Progressive and Compassionate Care

The management of crises is often challenging for patients and families. Known for our proactive role in prevention and in avoiding unnecessary intervention, the department maintains strong communication with our patients' families. We work to identify and solve potential difficulties, maximizing the use of alternative/creative problem-solving, so that patients are stabilized and able to safely return to the community and their homes.

Specialized Psychiatric Care

We specialize in the treatment of psychotic and mood disorders, often in the setting of co-existing chemical dependency. Allen Hospital has a multilingual staff and prides itself as being one of few U.S. centers that can provide services in Spanish to its Spanish-speaking patients and their families. Translation is always available for all other languages as well.

Mobile Crisis Team

In addition to our inpatient services, a multidisciplinary team provides a supportive system of care in the community. The team provides linkage to outpatient care and assessment at home for psychiatric crises. Our Mobile Crisis Team can be reached at 212-342-5797.

A Commitment to Education

We are a teaching center for Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons medical students and residents in psychiatry. Other professional trainees also have clinical rotations on our service, which fosters an academic and innovative environment.

Our Physicians

All physicians at Allen Hospital are also on the staff of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, one of the country's major medical centers. In addition, each of our physicians is a member of the highly regarded ColumbiaDoctors faculty practice. You can experience the level of exceptional care expected from NewYork-Presbyterian in a personal and accessible environment.
