The physicians and staff of the Department of Family and Community Medicine offer comprehensive primary medical care, pregnancy and family planning services, health promotion, and disease prevention to adults and children in northern Manhattan and the Bronx. Family Medicine hospital care for adults, as well as labor and delivery care, is provided at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital. Family medical care is also provided at the Herman "Denny" Farrell, Jr. Community Health Center on West 158th Street.

Family and Community Medicine is devoted to increasing access to primary care in our community, and has adopted a broader approach to care than is ordinarily found in primary care practices. Through our approach, called Community-Oriented Primary Care, we collaborate with organizations and individuals from the community to identify health-related challenges and to develop appropriate programs to address those issues. Our clinical, outreach, and educational programs include:

  • Breastfeeding education
  • Literacy program for children under age 5
  • Smoking prevention programs in grade schools
  • HIV prevention education program for minority girls
  • High school health education to address health issues important to adolescents
  • Home visitation

Our Physicians

All physicians at Allen Hospital are also on the staff of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, one of the country's major medical centers. In addition, each of our physicians is a member of the highly regarded ColumbiaDoctors faculty practice. This means that patients experience the level of exceptional care expected from NewYork-Presbyterian in a personal and accessible environment.
