Anesthesiology at The Allen Hospital

Anesthesiologists at The Allen Hospital offer round-the-clock anesthesia services to ensure comfort and safety during surgery and labor and delivery. Our anesthesiologists are board-certified, and many have additional expertise and training in providing anesthesia for specific types of surgery, as well as pain control during labor and delivery.

In all operative cases, our anesthesiologists collaborate with certified registered nurse anesthetists. This is known in professional circles as the Anesthesia Care Team model.

As part of a major academic medical center, New York-Presbyterian/Columbia, The Allen Hospital also trains student registered nurse anesthetists from Columbia University's School of Nursing. This ongoing educational involvement ensures that our care is of the highest caliber, and that our technology is the latest available. Our newest technology includes:

  • Glidescope, a tube with a tiny video camera at the end that provides a clear, real-time view of the patient's airway, enabling fast and accurate placement of a breathing tube into the patient's airway to enable breathing.
  • GE Logiq Ultrasound to help place peripheral nerve blocks for orthopedic procedures. This machine improves pain control after surgery, with greater safety.

Anesthesia During Labor And Delivery

At The Allen Hospital, anesthesiologists work with obstetricians and certified nurse midwives to address each patient's desired level of pain control. We offer a full range of anesthesia services including both traditional epidurals and more recent innovations such as combined spinal/epidural techniques, "walking epidurals," and spinal opioids for post-Cesarean section pain. Epidural services are provided only at the request of the patient and her obstetrical caregiver.

About Our Physicians

All Allen Hospital physicians are also on the staff of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia, one of the country's major academic medical centers. In addition, each of these physicians is on faculty of the highly regarded Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. This means that patients at The Allen Hospital experience a level of care found in a leading academic medical center while they are being treated in the intimate setting of a community hospital. Because our physicians are affiliated with New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, our patients also have access to Columbia's advanced equipment if needed.
