Hazardous Materials and Waste Management

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) department of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is responsible for assessing and mitigating potential environmental risks within the Hospital.

There are a number of waste streams generated at the Hospital and some of them are considered more hazardous than others. Because of the health hazards presented by certain waste streams to patients, visitors, staff and to the environment, EHS has provides resources and technical expertise when handling, labeling, storing and disposing of hazardous materials. EHS provides staff with training on how to clean a chemical spill. EHS manages the following hazardous materials and waste disposal programs, which help to mitigate risk while maintaining full compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations:

  • Hazardous Waste Vendor Management
  • Routine Inspections of Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAA) for Hazardous Material
  • Weekly Inspections of Main Accumulation Area (MAA) for Hazardous Materials
  • Centralized Waste Manifest Repository
  • Hazardous Materials Shipping
  • Emergency Spill Response
