NewYork-Presbyterian is an established leader in energy management. Since 2005, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized NewYork-Presbyterian with its ENERGY STAR Award for leadership in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. In 2005 and 2006 the hospital received Partner of the Year awards for Energy Management. In 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2011, the hospital received the Partner of the Year awards for Sustained Excellence in Energy Management – the energy program's highest honor. NewYork-Presbyterian was the only hospital to receive this award amongst 15,000 organizations. Our dedication continues through a variety of departmental efforts: energy studies, infrastructure renewal, NYSERDA grants, green materials specifications, LEED building design, and sustainable maintenance practices.

NewYork-Presbyterian's recycling program separates and collects confidential and non-confidential paper, metal (aluminum) and plastic bottles. Collections bins are placed throughout the hospital's clinical and administrative areas. It is important that we all learn the rules governing recycling, and abide by them.

Computers: Staff should email email@example.com and IT will pick up unwanted / obsolete PCs, printers and related hardware. These items should not be disposed of in regular trash.
Other electronics: Items such as PDAs, data storage media (old tapes, cds, floppies), telephones, pagers, lithium ion or lead batteries must be directed to Telecomm for proper disposal.
NewYork-Presbyterian has implemented a program to recycle used desktop printer toner cartridges, and each campus has a central designated drop-off point accessible to all staff. On average NewYork-Presbyterian uses approximately 10,000+ printer toner cartridges per year, each at an average weight of 2 pounds, so diverting them from the regular trash stream helps NewYork-Presbyterian decrease trash volume and reduce disposal costs. Waste minimization is one of the organization's priority sustainability goals.

NewYork-Presbyterian set a default standard that all photocopy machines be set to automatically print duplex (two-sided) copies. All hospital owned and operated copying machines, in both clinical and administrative spaces, both on and off campus, were converted to this standard.
Before the program began, NewYork-Presbyterian was using over 1,000 tons of copier paper each year. The Procurement and Strategic Sourcing Department closely monitors paper usage trends and reports data to the Sustainability Council. Within the first quarter of launching the effort, notable decreases in both paper demand, and therefore, dollars spent, were reported.
For machines that have fax capabilities enabled, only the "copy" feature will default to duplex. Should an occasional job require single sided copies, staff may override this feature for that one job.
NewYork-Presbyterian pro-actively seeks opportunities to minimize its waste streams. The Environmental Health and Safety Department collaborates with key areas such as the lab, pharmacy, facilities department, and support services to monitor hazardous waste volumes and continually seek opportunities and methods to minimize the volumes through one of the preferred reduction practices endorsed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The efforts align with NewYork-Presbyterian's environmental stewardship goals to reduce the hospital's environmental footprint through the minimization of waste, energy, and other resources.
Clinical device reprocessing (or single-use device, SUD) is typically done by a third-party registered with and regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The third-party reprocessor inspects, functionally tests, cleans, packages, and sterilizes medical devices labeled for single-use in such a manner that the quality, physical characteristics, and performance functions of the device are not significantly affected and that the device remains safe and effective for its appropriate clinical use.
By identifying specific devices for reprocessing, NewYork-Presbyterian reduces the amount of waste it generates and in 2010 realized over $1 million in cost savings through the reduced purchase of new products.
Under the leadership of its Procurement and Strategic Sourcing Department, NewYork-Presbyterian developed a policy and procedure to donate unwanted or obsolete clinical and non-clinical supplies, which helps reduce the hospital's waste volume and costs. NewYork-Presbyterian has teamed up with an organization called The Afya Foundation which collects items from hospitals and organizations and then delivers them to countries in need. NYPgreen's Wellness Task Force aims to increase the fitness and health of employees, patients, and visitors while reducing environmental impact. It has expanded the hospital's "Be Fit to Benefit" program – a signature program that encourages healthy lifestyles.
As well, in partnership with CHALK (Choosing Healthy and Active Lifestyles for Kids), this team was responsible for collaborating with Greenmarket to launch NewYork-Presbyterian's first ever farmer's market on Fort Washington Avenue between 168th and 169th Street in July 2010. The farmer's market brings healthy, green food resources to its employees, medical students, and surrounding community. NewYork-Presbyterian's support of farmers' markets provides the opportunity for employees and residents of the community to purchase produce grown by local farmers. In addition to the health benefits of fresh produce, food with fewer "food miles" (the distance from farm to market) requires less fuel to transport and offers a smaller carbon footprint.
NYPgreen's Wellness Task has also helped launch a "Take the Stairs" campaign, encouraging people to walk from floor to floor to save electricity and stay healthy. The campaign uses NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene "Burn Calories, Not Electricity" signs, tying into the Mayor's plaNYC to ready New York City for a greener future. In a three month follow-up evaluation of the campaign (which the task force implemented with CHALK resources) two out of three intervention sites at NewYork-Presbyterian showed a statistically significant increase in stair usage among patients and staff. The campaign is currently being expanded to other campuses.
NewYork-Presbyterian teams up with the New York Blood Center to continually increase blood donations for our patients and community, with the goal of being number one in New York City. The group works to continue strengthening an already impressive program that conserves one of the most critical resources on the planet – blood.
NYPgreen's Transportation Task Force established a web-based ride-sharing program for the hospital. The CommuterLink program is a self-service, web-based computer program that matches hospital employees with other employees for ride-sharing. This program is sponsored by the New York City Department of Transportation.
NewYork-Presbyterian has introduced 13 hybrid vehicles (Ford Escapes) to its cross-campus fleet.
In recent years, the City of New York has made efforts to improve and encourage bicycling in the city through the construction of new bike lanes, as well as promotional and awareness campaigns aimed at cyclists and motorists. NYPgreen is collaborating with the City of New York by working with its Department of Transportation to install bike racks at the hospital's campuses.
